Fireman Leonard John Arthur Price Palmer passed away on 15 March 1980 aged 72.

Leonard was born in Shanklin in early 1908 and baptised at St Saviours on 26 April. His parents were Florence Coraline and his father, twelve years his wife's senior, Frederick William was a musician and bookmakers agent. Both parents were originally from London. The 1911 Census lists Leonard as the youngest of seven children, the eldest being 15 year old Kate Lilian who was born in Folkestone. The next two eldest were born in Portsmouth and the younger four all in Shanklin.

Very little is known of Leonard's life other than that included in his Press obituary. This indicated that he was a well known sailmaker who worked for Ratsey and Lapthorn for 52 years. His attachment to sails extended into his spare time, maintaining membership of both the Island Sailing Club and Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club. As a member of Northwood Cricket Club he also kept a keen interest in the summer sport. The obituary stated that he'd served in Cowes Fire Brigade during the Second World War, indicating that more accurately he was an auxiliary and later NFS fireman.

Leonard passed away at home 20 Belle Vue Road, Cowes, on Saturday 15 March 1980.

Rest in peace Fireman Palmer.
