Fireman James Charles Reed of Ryde Fire Brigade passed away on 27 December 1939.
James was born in Shanklin on 13 December 1878. His mother was Elizabeth, also of Shanklin and his father Henry of Brading worked as a general labourer. As a two year old he lived with his parents and six siblings in Wilton Road.
Ten years later the 1891 Census evidences that the family had moved to the Oakfield district of Ryde at 2 Upper Eastfield.
On 14 July 1900 at St John's Church, Oakfield, James married Amy Lydia Mew of London. The Census of the following year located them at 6 Victoria Crescent in Ryde and James was earning a living as a carpenter.
The following Census of 1911 is more specific, stating that James was employed as a carpenter by the railway operator in Ryde. By now he and Amy, both 32, had two children, Arthur (7) and Nora (3).
Records of James's service with the fire brigade haven't been located.
On 27 December James was talking with a friend at the junction of St John's Road when he suddenly collapsed and died. The County Press reported his funeral of 30 December which was attended by members of the fire brigade of which the deceased was formerly a member.
Rest in peace Fireman Reed.
