Fireman Walter Baker of Ventnor Fire Brigade passed away on Christmas Day 1923.

Sadly very little has been unearthed that can unequivocally be attributed to Walter's life, there are several Walter Baker's resident on the Island during the correct era but none with a clear and unambiguous Ventnor connection.

Walter Baker of Ventnor was one of the old brigade's earliest members. Reporting his death the County Press remarked; Mr Baker was a man of high integrity and was held in the greatest esteem by his associates.

We know that he was a steward at the United Methodist church for many years, an ardent Liberal and a long-time employee of Messrs. Gilbert and Sons, bakers of Albert Street.

Rest in peace Fireman Baker.
