Fireman Samuel Arthur Walter Crouch passed away on 4 December 1948.
Samuel was a native of Hastings who moved to Wroxall with his family while still a child. He was later employed in the village as a butcher at Mr Gough's business.
During the First World War Samuel served with the Royal Army Service Corps. After the war he was a member of the British Legion while taking charge for sixteen years of the farm at East Dene Convent, Bonchurch.
The Second World War found him employed in an undisclosed capacity by the Air Ministry on St Boniface Down whilst also serving as a part-time member of the Auxiliary and then National Fire Service.
At the time of his death aged 60 at his home, 25 St Catherine Street at 05:00 in the morning, he had still been working full-time as a building labourer, employed by Mr D.T.W. Harding.
