Fireman Leslie Alfred Jacobs (represented as Alfred Leslie in some documents) was killed by enemy aerial bombardment on 3 January 1943.
Leslie was born in Sandown on 6 August 1903 the son of Charles and Alice. By the time of the 1939 Register he is recorded earning a living as a book-keeper and entries clerk and living at Shoreside, The Esplanade, Shanklin. At some stage he must have volunteered for the fire service and by the time of his death was serving with the Shanklin Company of the National Fire Service Fire Force 14d.
He was killed alongside eleven of his colleagues when the requisitioned Gloster Hotel, temporary headquarters of the Shanklin NFS, took a direct hit from a 500kg bomb.
Rest in peace Fireman Jacobs.
