Fireman Ronald Frederick Wheeler passed away on 27 August 1971 aged 57.

Ronald was a native of Ventnor where he spent all his life with the exception of his service days with the Army. He worked primarily in the building trade, latterly for his son Mr J.M. Wheeler.

In the town he was a keen member of the Golf Club and Social Club where he was an accomplished darts and crib player, he also undertook grounds keeping at the Cricket Club.

His firefighting service record represents him as probably one of the most experienced all-rounders in Island firefighting history. Prior to the Second World War he served in Ventnor Fire Brigade and then the Auxiliary Fire Service before transferring to the Army Fire Service with whom he spent the war.

Latterly he lived at 50 Newport Road, Ventnor. His funeral was held at St Alban's Church.

Rest in peace Fireman Wheeler.
