Fireman Bertram Percy Lewis of Shanklin section of the Auxiliary Fire Service and the Shanklin Company of National Fire Service, Fire Force 14d, passed away at Shanklin Cottage Hospital on 17 March 1964 aged 65.

Bertram of Silverdale, Sibden Road, Shanklin, spent fifty years in the employ of Messrs. T. Crone, furnishers, an incredible loyalty to his employer broken only by his service with the 6th Somerset Light Infantry as Pte Lewis 266073 during the First World War during which he was taken prisoner.

At the beginning of the second war, at 50 years old, Bertram volunteered for the Auxiliary Fire Service and served throughout some of Shanklin's most testing times of the war.

Rest in peace Fireman Lewis.
