A gathering of Sandown firemen, circa 1922.

Fireman William John Pressey of Sandown Fire Brigade passed away at his home Cygnet Villa, North Street, Sandown on 20 March 1929 aged 63.

When the younger men were called for war service fire brigades suddenly found their numbers depleted to dangerously low levels. William, aged 48 at the time, was one of several appointed to fill a space in Sandown Fire Brigade in January 1915.

In 1919, with the brigade back up to full strength, William was retained on a supernumerary basis and he remained attached to the brigade until resigning in 1926.

For over thirty years he was employed by the Island Waterworks Company. A few weeks before his death he suffered an attack of influenza but seemed to have recovered and returned to work, until he went downhill on 15 March. His funeral service was conducted by the Rev. C.Boulton Lee three days later at the United Methodist Church.

Rest in peace Fireman Pressey.
