Sub Officer Norman F.W. Thearle of the Auxiliary Fire Service, National Fire Service and Sandown Fire Station, IW Fire Brigade, passed away on 31 March 2018.
Norman joined the Auxiliary Fire Service at Lake in 1939 as a messenger/runner, then became a Fireman in the National Fire Service and remained as a fireman when the NFS disbanded and he remained at Sandown Fire Station when the IW County Fire Brigade was created in 1948. He was promoted to Leading Fireman in 1958 and Sub Officer in 1975 before retiring in 1978.
In his 39 years of service he served with his father George and brother Peter. Some say he was the best Station Officer Sandown never had! Those who met Norman will remember they had met a special man who left a lasting impression.
Former Station Officer Geoff Pidgeon met with Norman earlier in the year that he died and remarked that though he was frail he was still sharp, witty and lovable, the way he wished to remember him.
Rest in peace Sub Officer Thearle.
