Ventnor Fire Brigade, 1928. 'Joe' Jacobs is second from left in the front row.

Fireman Joseph Henry Jacobs of Ventnor Fire Brigade passed away 7 May 1941 aged 57.

Very little has been traced of Joseph's life except that he was born in Ventnor, married his wife Elizabeth sometime prior to 1911 and remained in the town where he served in the brigade for 23 years.

His funeral was held at the parish church three days later and attended by dozens of members of both the local 'regular' brigades and the Auxiliary Fire Service. His coffin was conveyed from his house to the church on the town fire-engine, draped with the Union Jack and topped with his belt, axe and helmet and a wealth of flowers. His coffin bearers were Ventnor fire brigade's Second Officer T. Pearson, Third Officer W. Grant, Fireman C. Wightman, Fireman C.W. Coleman, Fireman A. Wheeler and Fireman A.F. Beavis under parade marshall Captain P.R. Spencer.

Rest in peace Fireman Jacobs.
