Fireman Arthur Victor Saunders of Ventnor Company of the Auxiliary and later National Fire Service passed away 3 February 1968 aged 76.

Arthur served with the Royal Artillery during the First World War and then joined the Auxiliary Fire Service just before the Second World War and remained serving with the Ventnor Company when the National Fire Service was formed in August 1941.

For many years he was known for his spotless turnout as standard bearer for the Ventnor branch of the Royal British Legion. He was employed for a long time at Sharpe's furniture store in Spring Hill.

His first wife passed away in 1957 and although he remarried in 1961 he was interred at St Alban's Church cemetery in the grave of his first wife on the Wednesday following his passing.

Rest in peace Fireman Saunders.
