Fireman John James Frederick Slater of Shanklin died on 12 July 1948 aged just 24.

Sadly very little is known of John's short life other than he was a member of the Shanklin section of the NFS during the war and at some point lost the use of his legs.

His home was 6 Scinde Crescent, Shanklin. Despite this colossal impairment he was said to have been a happy and exuberant character and a very able and popular clerk in the employ of J. Arthur Dixon.

How or why he died isn't known but it occurred at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London. He was brought home for the funeral in Shanklin five days later.

Rest in peace Fireman Slater.
